I have a post about the recent nephew quilts in me, but first I will talk about the very fun skateboard birthday party we had today, plus I am irritatedly stuck on the design of the (small, no kids involved) quilt I'm supposed to be making for the auction this very second, so party talk instead!
Party favors: a finger board, an organic lollipop, a glow stick, & a custom vinyl sticker, all tucked inside a little pillow box.
I used sticker paper from Papilio, & was reasonably pleased with it. You print it, rinse off extra ink, let it dry, & then apply an optional laminating spray for UV protection. I found that it had a bit of the same issue I ran into when I used inkjet printable fabric last year -- the color rinsed down to a colorfast level ok, but there was some bleeding around the edges. If you try this stuff, I recommend doing a fast-moving rinse with a sink sprayer, if you can. Also, if you buy the spray, definitely do it outside (stinky!) but you should think about covering it during dry time for dust protection, also if you spray it outside in, say, February, you are probably not going to get a completely smooth finish if your temps are down in the, say, 30s. But, like I said: reasonably pleased, none of it was a deal-breaker, & it's pretty cool to be able to print waterproof vinyl stickers on the inkjet.
I have two things to say about the cupcakes. First of all, I completely failed to consider the ramifications of handing a roomful of eight year old boys cupcakes with tiny little pointy sticks embedded in them. Also, I tried to mix my own red frosting last night (for a decoration idea that ultimately failed anyway) & holy moly, that's hard. Oh, wait, three things: I have had a bit of a vegan cupcake breakthrough, which is that they -- particularly for vanilla, which is what these are -- do MUCH BETTER when I use a hand mixer instead of my KitchenAid. A hand mixer on, like, 2. I have baked, hm, 9 dozen? cupcakes over the past month & so have given the matter serious thought.
Anyway, I liked the cupcake picks, even though I am not sure that they will be making a reprise at a certain male child's ninth birthday, as he & his friends are hooligans.
Little skater hooligans. (Isn't that mural fantastic?)
Happy birthday, kid.
Happy birthday to your 8 year old! Looks like you did an awesome job on his party!

Lol--I always had to remove the little cocktail 'swords' that came with skewered fruit from my boys' reach when we went out to dinner-Hubby and I were having the drinks but the boys wanted the swords-for no good reason other than to put each other's eyes out!

Looks like a great party, love all the favors, I am sure he and his crew had a great time.

Several things in this post to give a smile and also inspiration. Hooligans! My boy is just five and I baulk at giving him a kebab stick. All sharp pointy objects come with dire warnings of 'be careful please!'. Nice job on the party favours.

Hello--I just found your blog via Reese Dixon's blog. This party brought back SO many memories that I had to post a comment. My son, now 23, was (still is a little) an avid skater at that age as well. However, I had to cart him and his local skating buddies 3 hours to the nearest skate park for them to enjoy such an experience. I learned after the first trip to have everyone bring a clean change of clothes for the trip home. I would put all the stinky-sweaty gear into trash bags, so the smell wasn't so overwhelming.
Andrew is now working on his MBA after recently graduating with a degree in accounting--so proud of him!
Thanks for letting me share

He's just turned 8? Really? Oooo, this makes me nervous - as my son will be turning 8 in August - but he still likes curious george, and is terrified of falling - though he did idolize an older kid who had a wave board last year. but is there that much "growing up" between then and now, or is my kiddo just a softie?
